Transition Streets
Start your journey to a more sustainable life
The news is filled with dire warnings about climate change and the impact it will have on our planet. It is easy to feel like there is nothing you can do, but you can make a difference.
Transition Streets is about joining with others in your community to make your home and your street more sustainable.
This means:
- Using less energy
- Using less water
- Being less dependent on non-renewable resources, such as oil, gas or coal
- Being more self-reliant with food
- Producing less waste
- Being healthier
- Creating a more enjoyable place to live.
Changing the world, one street at a time
Transition Australia has created a workbook which will guide you through the steps you can take as your street starts its journey to a more sustainable future.
The workbook will guide you through how to host your first meeting and set up your group. It has loads of ideas and practical examples of sustainable lifestyle changes that we can all do right now. The workbook is easy to follow and aims to encourage co-operation and creativity.
The workbook has chapters looking at:
- water
- energy
- food
- transport
- waste and consumption
We hope that through Transition Streets you will develop relationships within your immediate neighbourhood that will help you explore and respond to some of the significant environmental challenges before us. We have the potential to re-imagine the type of community we want to live in. We can create a vision for a better future and we can start working towards it now.
Start your journey by downloading the workbook below or find a Transition Streets project near you.

In 2020 we produced a much shorter version of the handbook, one designed for online use.
This has proven very useful for both local face to face groups and online meetups.
